AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews tracking for agencies
Google AI Overviews tracking means checking whether the AI snapshot on Google names or cites the client for the same buyer questions you already run in ChatGPT. It is still Google. It is not a blue-link rank, and it is not the same as Gemini. CiteBrief checks AI Overviews every week beside the other three surfaces.

What visibility in AI Overviews means
An AI Overview is the generated snapshot Google shows above or among classic results for some queries. Visibility means the brand is named in that snapshot, or a URL associated with the brand is used as a supporting source, on an unbranded buyer question you chose to score.
A #3 organic rank with no Overview mention is a different job. Keep AI Overviews out of the ranking table. The AI search visibility report is the combined letter.
Why agencies monitor AI Overviews
SEO retainers already include Google. Clients now ask whether the Overview names them. Answering with “your blog is position two” dodges the question. Answering with named / cited / who won on twenty buyer questions is the brief.
What CiteBrief tracks
CiteBrief is not a SERP API farm and not an Overview optimizer. It samples the same buyer questions used for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok so the account manager sends one artifact.
| Signal | AI Overviews | Classic SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Named | Brand in the snapshot | Not a ranking |
| Cited | Supporting link when present | Not a GSC impression |
| Who won | Brand the snapshot features | Not the #1 blue link |
| Cadence | Weekly, or monthly on Free | Continuous crawl |
What the report contains
Layout: sample weekly report. Method: unbranded questions only in the headline score.
- AI Overviews column in the per-engine table
- Named vs missing on each scored question
- Who the snapshot featured when the client was absent
- Five actions; GSC footnote on the cover
Interpreting a miss
If AI Overviews omit the client and cite a publisher roundup, the action is often PR or a better comparison page — the same work SEO teams already do, aimed at a different module. If Overviews name the client and ChatGPT does not, say both facts. Do not average Google with OpenAI.
Competitors
Track the incumbents who already win the classic pack. If Overviews keep citing a rival’s comparison hub, that hub is the work order. See AI search competitor analysis.
Actions
- Separate Overview misses from rank drops.
- Note cited domains when present.
- Ship one page or one earned source in ten days.
- Recheck on the next scheduled report — not with daily screenshots.
Fit with SEO reporting
Add the weekly report as a section, or send it the day it lands. Do not merge named-counts into impressions. For SEO agencies is the commercial page. Gemini visibility tracking covers the assistant, which is a different surface.
Pro is $99/mo for 3 brands checked weekly; client-ready white-label PDFs are the Agency add-on ($49/mo).
FAQ
Is this rank tracking for AI Overviews?
No. There is no stable “position.” We record whether the snapshot named or cited the brand on a dated buyer question.
Do Overviews always appear?
No. If Google does not show an Overview for that question that day, the row reflects what was available. Soft-fail still applies across the engines on your plan.
Should we add Overview mentions to Search Console?
No. Cover footnote: do not add these mentions to Search Console totals.
Where do we see a sample?
The anonymized Northline brief on /report uses the same per-engine table.
