What is an AI search visibility report?

An AI search visibility report is the client-ready brief that answers “did AI name us this period?” It is not a keyword rank, not a dashboard login, and not a blended vanity score. CiteBrief writes it every week: named in X of N unbranded buyer questions, who won the rest, and five actions, with the fixes behind them. Agencies send it white-labelled to clients.

Direct answer

An AI search visibility report measures whether answer engines name or recommend a brand when a buyer asks a category, comparison, job, or switch question. The unit is a question, not a keyword. The output is a letter the client can read without a login.

CiteBrief is the agency version of that letter: white-label PDF and private link covering ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI Overviews. Score only unbranded prompts. Put “what is {Client}?” in the appendix.

What an AI search visibility report is not

If the CMO has to learn your tool to understand the finding, you built a tracker export, not a report. The AI visibility report for agencies is the retainer packaging; this page is the object itself.

  • Not Search Console or GA4. Mentions are not impressions. Do not add them to GSC totals.
  • Not traditional rank tracking. Positions do not exist the same way inside a chat answer.
  • Not a daily GEO suite or share-of-voice crawler. Cadence is weekly or monthly, not a live ticker.
  • Not a client seat. The client gets a PDF or an expiring link.

Metrics that belong on the cover

Keep page 1 short enough to screenshot. Two scores, one paragraph, then the table.

MetricHow to computeWhat it is not
Named in X of NUnbranded comparison, job, and switch questions onlyA 0–100 “AI score” averaged across engines
Recommended in Y of NThe model tells the buyer to use themA mention that says “avoid them”
Who wonThe brand named when the client was missing“Invisible” with no rival

Platforms

Clients say ChatGPT and then paste the same question into Gemini. A serious brief checks every engine buyers use: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and Google AI Overviews. Dedicated pages: ChatGPT visibility tracking, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Overviews.

  • ChatGPT — the name clients use
  • Gemini — where they paste it next
  • Grok — another consumer surface; engines disagree
  • AI Overviews — Google is still in the room

Report structure

Steal the page list from the AI search report template. Fill it by hand, or generate a live brief from a domain.

  1. Cover: agency logo, client, dates, named / recommended, two-sentence summary.
  2. Per-engine table: never one blended number as the only score.
  3. Lost buyer questions: question, engines missed, who won, one-line verbatim, cited URL.
  4. Short proof: 2–4 verbatims, not full answers.
  5. Competitors: who took the slot, on how many scored questions.
  6. Five actions with an owner (content, site, PR, listings, sales).
  7. Method appendix: prompt list, engines, timestamps, branded checks excluded from X of N.

How to interpret a missing mention

A miss means: on this question, on this engine, on this date, the model did not name the client. It does not mean the site is broken. It does not mean the brand has zero awareness. It means a buyer who asked that question heard someone else.

Always pair the miss with who won. “Missing on Asana alternatives for agencies; ClickUp won ChatGPT and Gemini” is a work order. “AI visibility is down” is a vibe.

Agency workflow

Package it as a line on the existing SEO, content, or PR retainer. Do not invent a new product the client has to approve from zero.

Pro is $99/mo for 3 brands checked weekly; client-ready white-label PDFs are the Agency add-on ($49/mo). Starter is $39/mo for 1 brand, checked weekly. See pricing. The annotated sample is on the weekly report.

  • Add the client brand, competitors, and 15–30 unbranded buyer questions.
  • Run ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and AI Overviews on every paid weekly check (monthly on Free).
  • Forward the white-label PDF. Clients do not need an account.
  • On the call: named score, one rival, one action in ten days. Stop talking.

Example output (anonymized)

Northstar named in 12 of 20 scored questions, recommended in 7. Biggest hole: Asana alternatives for agencies, where ClickUp still wins the shortlist. Next action: publish the comparison page. That is the whole story. The rest is evidence.

FAQ

How is this different from an SEO report?

SEO reports rankings and traffic. An AI search visibility report answers whether assistants named the brand on buyer questions. Keep them in the same pack. Do not merge the scores.

How many questions belong in the named score?

Enough unbranded prompts to defend the number — typically 15–30 per brand. Branded “what is {Client}?” checks stay in the appendix.

Is this GEO reporting?

GEO is the category buyers search. What matters is whether the answers name you, and what you change when they don't. See GEO reporting for agencies.

Can we send it white-label?

Yes. Logo, color, prepared-by footer, CiteBrief off the cover. Details on white-label AI visibility reports.
