How to track brand visibility in ChatGPT
ChatGPT visibility tracking means asking the questions a buyer would type, recording whether ChatGPT names the client, and acting on it, not filing screenshots. CiteBrief runs the same questions on ChatGPT plus Gemini, Grok, and AI Overviews every week, so one engine never surprises you.

What ChatGPT visibility means
A brand is visible in ChatGPT when the model names it in an answer the buyer did not seed with the brand. “Best payroll for 40-person agencies” that lists the client is a mention. “What is {Client}?” is a branded check. It is useful in the appendix. It is not the headline score.
Visibility is per question and per date. ChatGPT does not publish a stable ranking URL. You sample answers, then compare the next period on the same question set.
Why agencies monitor ChatGPT
Clients already ask “are we in ChatGPT?” They will ask it on a renewal call. Screenshots into Slides become a part-time job across a book of accounts. The how-to for reporting ChatGPT visibility is the call script. This page is the measurement.
- Prove you checked this period
- Show who ChatGPT recommended when the client was missing
- Give five actions instead of a model lecture
What CiteBrief tracks on ChatGPT
Paid weekly checks run ChatGPT alongside Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and AI Overviews. ChatGPT is not a separate product: it is one column in a per-engine table, with the sources each engine cited.
| Signal | On ChatGPT | In the PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Named | Brand string appears in the answer | Named in X of N scored questions |
| Recommended | The model tells the buyer to use them | Recommended in Y of N |
| Who won | Another brand took the shortlist slot | Competitor name, not “n/a” |
| Cited URL | A source the model used, when present | Short proof, not a dump |
What appears in the report
Default PDFs hide raw model text. Evidence stays in the in-app sources drawer when someone challenges a finding. Walk the layout on the sample report.
- Cover score across the scored set (unbranded only)
- ChatGPT cell per buyer question: named, missing, who won
- One next action per gap
- Five priorities for the next ten days
- Method line: engines, date, market
How to interpret a ChatGPT miss
If ChatGPT omits the client on “Asana alternatives for agencies” and names ClickUp, the work is a comparison page, a roundup mention, or a listing fix — not “more ChatGPT SEO.” If Gemini names the client and ChatGPT does not, say that. Engine disagreement is the finding. Averaging it into one score hides the work.
Brand vs competitors
Add the competitors the client already loses sleep over. CiteBrief records who won each question. That is AI search competitor analysis, not a daily share-of-voice graph. The client should see three names, not fifty.
What to do after a ChatGPT brief
- Pick the highest-intent miss with a named rival.
- Assign an owner: content, site, PR, listings, or sales.
- Ship one page or one outreach motion in ten days.
- Ask the same question in next week's check. Do not rotate the set every week.
Fit with SEO or PR reporting
Keep ChatGPT out of the ranking table. Add one page to the monthly pack, or send the weekly report on its own. SEO agencies: AI-search reporting for SEO agencies. PR agencies: AI reporting for PR.
Pro is $99/mo for 3 brands checked weekly; client-ready white-label PDFs are the Agency add-on ($49/mo). Clients never log in.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT-only tracking enough?
For a first conversation, yes. For a retainer, no. Clients paste the same question into Gemini. CiteBrief checks every engine side by side in one report.
Do we screenshot every answer?
One screenshot as proof is fine. A folder of screenshots is how this became a part-time job. Send a table.
Can we count ChatGPT mentions in Search Console?
No. Put the footnote on the cover: do not add these mentions to Search Console totals.
How often does CiteBrief check ChatGPT?
Free is checked monthly. Every paid plan is checked weekly. There is no daily ChatGPT crawl.
